The U.S. Army Cadet Corps provided the Color Guard for opening ceremonies at tonight's Lexington Legends baseball game.
The Color Guard was under the command of C/CPL Patterson of the Army Cadets of the National Capital Region, and was trained by PFC Kristina Webb, assigned to the National Cadet Training Center
Doing the Color Guard for a baseball game is great for the Cadets. The only problem I have is the female Cadet saluting the Flag in public. She has never served a day in the Military. Therefore she should have her hand placed over her heart like all the other civilians in the picture.
ReplyDeleteSorry, but you're incorrect...she did exactly as she should do. Cadets and adults (officers and enlisted status within USAC), by virtue of being in a military-style uniform, are expected to render military honors to the National Anthem and the American Flag.
ReplyDeleteSimilarly, we exchange salutes with active duty, reserve and National Guard personnel, as well as the Civil Air Patrol and Naval Sea Cadet Corps.
What may be confusing is the uniform that she is wearing. USAC uses a "Utility Delta" uniform, consisting of ACUs from the waist down, the USAC PT T-shirt and the Patrol Cap. This is an extreme hot weather uniform and used during training situations. It is also used during public affairs events, as the T-shirt very clearly distinguishes USAC personnel from being in the Army.
The military salute is expected for USAC personnel, just as for active duty personnel. That is demonstrated daily during Retreat. Therefore, since the PFC was in a uniform during the presentation of the Colors, she was spot-on by saluting during the National Anthem.
